Raef is an alternative Rock Band from Maryland. I first heard their music at the MAS Youth Outlandish tour earlier this summer (they opened for Outlandish). Mashallah, they are the second Muslim rock band that Ive come across (Project 26 being the other). It is really great and aspiring to see the how talented and diverse our Muslim brethren across North America are - and how they are using their talent to promote positive music with meaning. Here is some of their work:

The Bright Moon Rose Over Us:

Tala Al Badru Alayna (Acoustic)

For more of their music, and more information about Raef, check out raefmusic.com/, or their YouTube Page.

Oh please, couldn’t they ruin some other nasheed with their rockish talent. I do think they’re good with their music, but not impressed that they ruined that nasheed -.-

    They’re a good rock band :P that’s all.

If your going to remix tala al badru alayna, at least make it sound like your standing with the people of Madinah.

    Stop hating!

Just because u dont personally like the style of music - doesnt make it “ruined”. The same could be said about Yusuf Islam’s original “The bright moon rose over us” ruining the original for not being completely in arabic, and so on… Raef’s version, in my opinion, is just another translation of the classic - and they should be commended for it!

And if you dont like it - thats fine - ur right to have ur own tastes and likes.

And MR: The people of Madina - they are from a specific culture and context. We are in a different culture nowadays and this song is for people within our context in 21st century America.

    sallam,

sorry dude, these guys have totally ruined the nasheed. it really is a shame!! Its just another group realising that there is a “muslim market” to exploit. But the way i see it.

if the beloved prophet s.a.w herd this what would his s.a.w opinion be on them?

    Allah (SWT) knows best

    @ Hassan,
wow, you don’t even know who they are and you’re already passing judgments on their intentions to ‘exploit’ Muslims - how ‘Islamic’ of you. Rockandroll music is not really my cup of tea, but I certainly support thier work. i just saw them at ISNA and they were very decent.

    @ Raef
keep up the good work. May Allah (SWT) reward you for your work

this is maybe not my favorite song but i do see the merit of making the song our own, every culture has adapted the nasheed to their society, yall do understand that when we adapt it the america, it doesn’t HAVE to sound like our narrow definitions of nasheed.. this is how THEY view this song, muslims need to be a little more tolerant.. less than 5 percent of the muslim community listens to YOUR definitions of “nasheeds”

rock on raef, ignore these cats

I agree with the above said by Haseeb. Not gonna lie it’s not my favorite arrangement of the classic song. But, that’s the beauty in it being a ‘Classic” nothing will ever be as great. Let’s save the hating for another forum…they have talent which can not be denied. And for those who aren’t entertained listen to the second acoustic arrangement maybe more your taste.

Haters fuel Raef. Keep it up boys.

    @ Saad , don’t use Yall. ever. :)

thanks for this interpretation of the harmony.

i do like the original, but this version resonates with me more emotionally in terms of meaning because of the combination of the English with the guitar.
