Haven’t responded to one of your blog-posts for quite a while. Hope you’re doing well insha-Allah !

Freedom of speech, right?… Well, what Geertje (diminutive for ‘Geert’) can, I can too

I am (as always) speaking from the perspective of a muslim Dutch-Moroccan young woman.

Here are some facts about Geertje and his issues:

* He used to be a member of the Dutch liberal party, VVD. They kicked him out because he wanted to be the spokes-person on matters concerning ‘Integration’. This party wanted him to conform to their own way of dealing ‘with those who need to integrate’. This way was/is: don’t say everything out loud but disguise it with a shiny wrapper and some ribbons, beacuse that makes it easier to sell.

* He is the founder, president and fraction-leader (I have no idea what i should call this in English) of a political party in the Dutch Parlement >>> Me, myself and I

* People can vote for his party during elections, they can send him money (or hydrogen peroxide for his hair ), but they cannot become a member of his party >>> Because members have a say/an influence on the party, but it’s supposed to be … ‘Me, myself and I’

* This political party of his is called: Party For Freedom (PVV in Dutch). >>> Freedom for who you ask? For ‘Me, myself and I’

* This political party is a one-issue party: it’s only goal is to spread lies, fear and hatred (3 old buddies that still go hand in hand) concerning islam and muslims. >>> Why? Because Holland should be only like and only for ‘Me, myself and I’

* People who voted for this party are: islamophobic, xenophobic, mostly unemployed, dissatisfied with and distrustful of with the biggest political parties in our country, ignorant, scared and upset, in a identity-crisis: they cannot accept the fact that Holland is a country with many ethnicities, many religions and that it will stay that way. If Geertje’s party didn’t exist they wouldn’t vote at all, but since it does they voted for it.
But after watching him many years in parlement they will soon be tired of him not achieving his goals: to prohibit the Qu’ran in Holland, to ban constitutional laws such as freedom of religion, to arouse riots, to have everyone who looks (facial features, skin-colour, clothing etc.) like a muslim (what does a muslim look like? I don’t know eventhough i am a muslim!) swear that they are not a muslim and that they will live according to the ‘Dutch’ way (what is the ‘Dutch’ way? I don’t know and i am Dutch!). These people will then no longer sing along to his song ‘Me, myself and I’, because they’ll realise that he means it literally.

* The media in Holland is bored (hey, we are the people who invented real-life soap ‘Big Brother’, we easily get bored!) so they give Geertje his attention hoping for new news, words, images, sensations etc. until he crosses the line drawn by the law (but hey, that’s also news).

* The Dutch who haven’t forgotten about history know that the word ‘muslim’ in his rethoric can easily be replaced by ‘jew’ or ‘immigrant’ or ’somebody else’ who are all in fact not ‘they’, but ‘us’. That’s Geertje’s nightmare: that ‘they’ will be called ‘us’, without being like ‘Me, myself and I’.

* Geertje has no idea, or simply doesn’t care, how this will affect the world’s view on Holland.

Meanwhile, Dutch people like myself are going to school/ college, are working, are praying… are simply living their lives, because the day turns into the night and the night turns into the day.

Speaking about day and night… God makes the sun come up in the East, why don’t you make it come up in the West, Geertje? Surely ‘Me, myself and I’ can do that, right Geertje?

Let us truly honor our beloved Prophet by following his example and waking up for Fajr everyday. That is a real challenge for us, not dealing with European xenophobes.

Take a look at those who are driving attention to the film. They’re those who want conflict.

Most people don’t care about the film. Why should I care what some bizarre looking albino says about the Prophet (SAW)?

Angry protests would indirectly market the film.

Fortunately, protests have been weak. A respected newswire wrote an article about “dozens” of protesters in Pakistan. It’s a country of 160 million people!

That doesn’t mean we don’t care about the Prophet (SAW). We love him. But he was ridiculed and disrespected in his own time. And yet, 1400 years later, his name is the most common in the world.

Honor him by living his way of life, being your best self, and learning and preserving his tradition.

Ignore the film. There are vested political interests who would like to incite conflict between Muslims and non-Muslims.

We cannot afford that. Our way is the way of peace.

Look away. Ignore the film. Ignore the film and Geert will go back to working at a supermarket.

And yes, i think geert could use a hug or two.

I also think that is the best way to deal with angry extremists of any kind.

If the vast majority of people of all faiths, views and political orientations respond like this then everything will (eventually) get better.
