Lupe Fiasco: Red M&Ms are haraam :(

A fellow Lupe Fiasco fan linked me to one of his interview’s on New York’s HOT 97 radio station. During the interview, he discusses a rather weird request he has for his performances - he only wants yellow m&m’s in his dressing room. Now why would he do that?

Because he is a Muslim and red m&m’s are haram!

Red M&M’s are dyed with a substance that contains Colchineal, an insect. The consumption of insects is haraam. :(

    Salaam,

    It’s not just M&M’s.
Cochineal is used in tons of foods: http://money.aol.com/bw/general/canvas3/_a/whats-in-my-food/20060808141909990001

    Pays to be a Maliki-

From the Guiding Helper (English adaptation of al-Murshid al-Muin by Ibn ‘Ashir) Preconditions for slaughter in Maliki fiqh are:

2132 The first wajib is to cut the two large artery veins of the animal that run on the front sides of the neck or
upper chest. The cut must take place below the voice box (larynx) of the animal in order for it to be correct.
[If a land creature with blood flow does not have two normal large artery veins (e.g., locust), then its neck must
be cut to fulfill the first three wajibs.]
[If a land creature does not have normal blood flow (e.g., worm or ant), then it may be killed in almost any
    manner and then eaten
    .]

I didn’t eat them too! And there is a lot of food that we think that we can’t eat them!So be careful in the future…
A sister said me that the Colchineal is not the insect but something on the insect, a kind of powder…
Allah (SWT) ou érlém!Only God knows!

Colchineal can also be named as carmine or carminic acid, it’s found in lots of foods such as strawberry milk shakes or yogurt as well as in cosmetics. Does anyone know if they’re required to label it at all times? Its pretty distgusting.

I called Mars (the company that produces M&Ms) they said they use a red dye called Allura Red AC, which doesnt contain cochineal. Maybe we should it avoid it in case, Allahu alim.

I LOVE M&M’s and i’ll keep eating them. All the colors! This is by far one of the most ridiculous things i’ve ever seen.

Let’s make sure the M&M wrapper and all candy wrappers aren’t made out of gelatin too.
