Native Deen - Not Afraid to Stand Alone REVIEW
Published by Haseeb December 3rd, 2007 in Islam, Music, Native Deen
Native Deen’s second official album, “Not Afraid to Stand Alone” truly displays the different musical talents of Joshua Salaam, Naeem Muhammad, and Abdul Malik. They have come a long way from their MYNA Raps roots and this album is sure to please all of their diverse fans from across the world.
Inshallah I’ll go over the album generally and a few tracks that I particularly liked. I have also included brief (non-downloadable) audio clips.
The album begins with the title track, Subhanallah, because of course we should always begin everything we do with the name and praise of Allah
, as Native Deen has done.
The second track, is the first of several interludes by DJ Ma’alam Abdullah who is supposed to be a radio host anticipating the arrival of this new album. It features several “call-in’s” praising Native Deen for all of their work and talent. These interludes feature our beloved Imam Siraj Wahaj (Track 5), ISNA Prsident, Dr Ingrid Mattson (Track 10), Rami Nashashibi, from Chicago’s Innercity Muslim Action Network (track 17), and finally Native Deen themselves (track 20). These interludes are a nice separation between the songs, and help remind the listeners of all of the great work Native Deen is doing and the positive impact their music is having on millions of young Muslims. Native Deen also has a chance to thank the fans for all of their support as well.
Stand Alone, the title track, and also the first single from the album is arguably also the best song. You can see the amazing video for this track HERE. It follows a newly hijab wearing single mother facing difficulties at her non-Muslim school where she works, along with a young high school student facing his difficulties as the only Muslim in his class. ‘Stand Along’ is very empowering song reminding us all that despite what difficulties we face, we are never truly alone, as Allah
is always by our side.

Lord is Watching is a song that unfortunately most young Muslims can relate to: Sneaking out of their homes late at night to attend haram parties, Downloading & Viewing haram pictures/videos on the internet, and cheating on Exams. If our friends or parents found out about such actions, we would be so embarassed, yet Allah
is always watching!
As Samee’, (The All Hearing)
Al Baseer, (All Seeing),
Al Raqeeb, (The Watchful One)
Al Khabeer,( The Aware)
Inna rabbaka ala kulli shayin qadeer
(Truly your lord is aware of all things)

Still Strong, is my favorite track on this album. Oh yes, did I mention it features Isam Bachiri from Outlandish? This song follows a young man who is wrongfully imprisoned in a post-9/11 world and, by the faith of God, remains strong through all the pain, questioning, torture, and overall injustice.

Tala’al Badru is one of the most beautiful renditions of the classic. Its chorus features the arabic lyrics, dispersed between lovely english verses praising the most beloved of all of creation, the Prophet Muhammad
.

Zamilooni is a beautiful track featuring Zain Bhikha. It is actually a love song, but not your typical love song. Zamilooni is about the prophet’s first true love, Khadijah (ra). She was not only was she his first wife, but also the first to accept Islam and comforted and aided him during his most difficult times during the beginning of his prophecy.

The album concludes with a Native Deen classic, M-U-S-L-I-M. One cant help but get pumped up listening and singing alone with this Native Deen Hit expressing the pride we all should have to be MUSLIM.

sounds cool
ANYTHING on the internet is downloadable.
Great review for a great album
wow those songs are definitely a notch up from their other albums. thanks for sharing.
Can only say I’m impressed
Not afraid to stand alone has a nice theme to it, and I think tala al badru is really cute almost like a callypso version
But no track on the album comes even close to “still strong”, the guys have a really tight flow a good theme, and last but not least Isam is just outta this world on that track.
Every word is perfect, I think apart from his verses on “try not to cry” this must be the best verses ever in Muslim music (nasheed/islamic hip hop), cant think of anything more eloquent and potent at the same time,
Keep up the good work, its a wicked album.
Beautiful songs…Mash’Allah
