For those of you unfamiliar with Amir Sulaiman, he is already a highly accomplished spoken word poet, probably best known for the following poem, “Danger”, which he performed on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam (which coincidentally is hosted by Mos Def):

I have heard this album in full already. Great album! I encourage everyone who is a fan of hip hop, poetry, and islam to get a copy and support the brother.
OH MAN!!! AMIR SULAIMAN JUST DID A COLLABO WITH MOS?? crazinesss… this is the beginning man..i can believe it

Amir Sulaiman should stick to spoken word poetry instead of rapping. It sounds better without beats.
But much respect.
For the awliya! For the awliya! for the shuhada! for the mujahideen!
the thing is…with beats he can reach a much larger audience and i think over time he will improve and learn how to sit his rhyme over the beat..
You are right with beats. The beat has to be good. If you look at what’s hot in the hip hop world you will see that most of the popular songs are ridiculously stupid but the beat is what makes it hot so people enjoy it.
Hot Beat Bad Lyrics = Popular song
Bad Beat Good Lyrics = Unpopular song
Hot Beat Good Lyrics = Nas/Common/Lupe Fiasco/The Roots/Wu Tang/2 Pac/Talib Kweli/OneBeLo/Kanye West/etc.
Completely off topic but you guys should check out Spidey 3. Its just as good as the other ones. Sure some guys whine about the fact that its a tear jerker etc. but you know whining isnt exactly the most macho thing.
to mr. spidey fan…the third one was NO WHERE CLOSE to as good as the first two…two much action packed into one movie… so yeah…def disagree..
haha.. and you’re right, that was def off topic haha..sall good
Who is he referring to when he says a “mind like douglas” and “voice like chris”? I suppose Turner = Nat Turner, and not Tina turner.
What is ‘Eliotic’? Like T.S. Eliott? or is some other word?
and who is “sincaid/sincay” who killd the slave trader?
thanks history buffs!
It’s Frederick Douglass (yes, two s’s), a freed American slave who went on to pen his autobiography very eloquently though he’s never had formal education. He later led an anti-slavery movement.
The guy who killed the slave trader/owner could possibly be John Brown, an abolitionist.
Don’t know much about the rest. Sorry.
Check out Tahani Salah’s spoken word on youtube.

It’s (Joseph) Cinque, who led a group of kidnapped Africans in taking over the slave ship Amistad (there was a recent movie about it.)
Voice like Kris, refers to KRS-One aka Kris Parker.
It’s “illiotic”.
Allaah knows best.
