Mets 2007 Season Preview
Published by Haseeb April 2nd, 2007 in Mets, Sports
Its that time of the year again, time for my annual Mets Season Preview. (2006 Preview, 2005 Preview). As always, Ill go over the starting lineup, pitching rotation and then give an overall team prediction for the season.
Stating Lineup
1. Jose Reyes (SS) - The most electryfing man in baseball today. There is no other offensive player who affects the team’s overall performance than Jose Reyes. The Mets prevented him from playing winter ball this year, so he should be fresh and healthy throughout the season. After an amazing MVP-caliber season, he should only continue to refine his skills and improve. A viable MVP candidate this season (and my personal pick this year for NL MVP). .303; 20 HR; 80 RBI; 200 hits; 65 SB.
2. Paul Lo Duca (C) The 2006 team leader in average should continue his solid hitting. This under-rated catcher will be an all-star again in 2007. .315; 8 HR; 68 RBI.
3. Carlos Beltran (CF) Top-15 player in all of baseball, and should continue his all-star ways. After struggling early on in his Met career, now in the middle of the greatest offensive show in baseball; Beltran will have another All-Star and MVP caliber season. .290; 40 HR; 120 RBI
4. Carlos Delgado (1B) After being the proud father of a newborn son this week, Delgado is back in the heart of the mets’ lineup. He will continue to dominate NL pitching en route to a typical .275; 40 HR; 120 RBI season.
5. David Wright (3B) Would have been the 2006 NL MVP if he didnt mess up his offensive rhythm in the Home Run Derby. My 2006 Pick for MVP will, like his fellow infielder Reyes, will only continue to improve and mature this season. Will rival Jose Reyes in the race for 2007 NL MVP. Fresh for a new season (and this year i hope he wont take part in the derby) there is no reason why this 24 year old superstar shouldnt have another great season. .320; 33 HR; 125 RBI.
6. Moises Alou (LF) I’m not going to lie. I miss Cliff Floyd and wish he were still batting behind his buddy Wright. However Moises Alou, even at 40 years of age should provide solid offensive numbers, if he stays healthy. .290; 20 HR; 70 RBI.
7. Shawn Green (RF)Although no longer the offensive all-star he once was; still a great hitter to have batting 7th. .275; 22 HR; 69 RBI
8. Jose Valentin (2B) At 37 years of age will still have a solid season both defensively and offensively. .270; 15 HR; 65 RBI
Pitching Rotation
1. Tom Glavine Mr. consistency. Even at 41, Glavine will have another all-star season (during which he will earn his 300th career win). 17-8; 3.75 ERA
2. Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez This 57 year old will not remain healthy. I will be surprised if he gets more than 20 starts all season. 6-7; 4.5 ERA
3. John Maine This 25-year old has looked good this spring, but time will tell how he will fare this season. 12-7; 3.9 ERA
4. Oliver Perez After a horrible season (3-13) Oliver Perez was came through huge in the playoffs last year. This year should be a breakthrough season for 25 year old left-hander. 13-8; 4.1 ERA
5. Mike Pelfrey A potential stud. This 23-year old could either have a great season or a horrible one. But one thing is for sure this 6′7″ righty has the talent. I have no idea how he will do this season, but as a Mets fan i will be optimistic. 14-5; 3.9 ERA.
The 2007 Mets arent that different from the 2006 team. Offensively; we have the best team in the majors; and i have no doubt our offense will be able to outslug the competition all season. 95-67 and 1st place in the NL East is a lock. However as far as the playoffs go, thats when the elite teams seperate themselves from the good teams; and elite teams need elite pitching. If Pedro comes back healthy this season, or if one of the young pitchers has a breakthrough season and/or the Mets make a mid-season acquisition (trade Lastings Miledge [whos looking GREAT this spring], for example) for a solid pitcher, the Mets should (and i’A will) win it all this season and be crowned 2007 MLB Champions. ![]()

Umm…yeah…
GO YANKS!!
are your previews consistent?
I think you mean El Duque is 37, not 57
lol junaid
no actually i did mean 57. I tried to be a sarcastic. While is official age is 37; he definitely is alot older than that.
Yeah, I think with Cuban or Dominican pitchers they might as well just give a range instead of a fixed age.
Remember Danny Almonte a few years back? The “kid” was pitching against 11 and 12 year olds. Meanwhile, a few days without shaving and he would’ve grown a Sunna beard!
CHyeaaaaaaa THE NEW YORK METS ARE TAKIN IT THIS YEARRR!!!!
As salaam alaikum.
I didn’t have you pegged as the Wall Street, card carrying GOP sort — you learn something new everyday!
The way I see it, NY’s real team are going to run the table this year and win the pennant easy. Then win both the AL and World Series with a double sweep.
Go Yanks!
Ma’as salaama,
nuh ibn
he might be 57, but apparently duque should be our cleanup hitter. plus, he must have some ancient secrets that allow him to keep getting outs with an 85 mph fastball, lol. and i think alou can have a monster year if he stays healthy, beautiful swing. and finally, JOSE JOSE JOSE JOSEEEE!
The Mets have a good lineup, but your pitching is garbage. You guys are lucky you play in AAAA, I think the NL East will be between the Braves and Phillies, Mets finish 3rd (just like 2005).
