To Allah we belong and to Him is our return.
Published by Haseeb February 13th, 2007 in PersonalYesterday my grandmother’s soul was returned to Her Creator.
Bibi Jaan, as we called her, was an amazing woman.
As a matter of fact, Bibijan wasn’t even my biological grandmother. My father and his six siblings were orphaned at young ages. They lost their mother when my youngest paternal aunt was only six months old, and then lost their father only three years later. After that Bibijan, (my father’s eldest aunt) adopted everyone and moved them into her own home. She never got married and devoted her entire life to raising her nephews and nieces as if they were her own children, and to my father and his siblings – they never felt otherwise.
Although my personal recollections of Bibi Jann were limited due to our geographical difference, she always remembered my family in her duas and my parents would speak to her especially all the time. The last time my mother spoke to her she asked that we read Quran for her, and inshallah soon we will be holding a Khatm-Quran for her.
Early in my childhood (in the late 80s) I do vaguely remember Bibi Jaan coming to New York to visit us. I remember her being shocked at the apparent public immorality and lack of shame in this society, and was always worried about us remaining steadfast on our deen. It may truly be due to her duas alone that my brother and I have been shielded from much of the sinful ways that so many Muslims fall prey to in this society. Allahu’alim.
Bibijaan was the nucleus of my entire khandan. She meant the world not only to her children, but to three large and expanding generations of families - across the world.
Although small in physical stature, she had the grandest of hearts.
Despite her lack of formal education, she was the greatest of teachers.
Regardless of her physical limitations she remained the strongest of women.
In spite of all her burdens, she was the most independent of women.
And without bearing any children of her own she was the best of mothers.
Please keep her as well as the rest of my family (especially both of my parents, Baba, Shaista aunty, Tepu Bhai, Zuby Bhai, Fauzia Phuppo, and everyone else back home) in your du’as.

“O Allah
, forgive and have mercy upon her, excuse her and pardon her, and make honourable her reception. Expand her entry, and cleanse her with water, snow and hail, and purify her of sin as a white robe is purified of filth. Exchange her home for a better home, and her family for a better family, and her spouse for a better spouse. Admit her into the Garden, protect her from the punishment and the grave and the torment of the fire.” Amen amen amen.
give patience and Imaan to her family and loved ones, what a great woman she was.
Inna lillah wa inna ilaihi raji3oon
Wala7awla wala quwwata illa billah
May Allah

Aww your post almost brought me to tears..
May Allah
reward her infinitely, she sounds like a wonderful woman. We know the rewards for those who take in orphans … may Allah

Insha’Allah
she is covered with the noor of Allah

give her all the best in the akhirah. Ameen.
That was so beautifully written that I feel I have to leave a response today. I normally check into your blog to check the whereabouts or developments of Mr Obama..but this was something i did not expect to find.
It’s amazing how one women, and especially a women can leave such a resonance to some three genrations..May Allah
have mercy on her soul, and give all those she has left behind the strength and will to achieve as she did. She was an example it seems, to the real beauty of motherhood- the act of selflessness and unconditional love.
We sister’s can perhaps take lessons from bibijaan and strive to be the core of our own family and yearn to have such a lasting effect on generations that come after us.
Ameen
