What is desired from a believer is not to be ignorant about what is going on in the earth… a believer should know and understand the world that he lives in… but a believer should also remain firm and not be negatively affected by the surroundings that he is in - and also a believer should never forget why he has been created… why Allah (SWT) has created the heavens and the earth….

…the entire heavens and the earth has been created for knowledge and worship… This should be the core of our lives - knowledge and ibadat… We should be people that strive in our daily affairs to always increase in knowledge, to always increase in ibadat - and both of these go hand in hand

Subhanallah, I really need to re-remind myself of this.

Unfortunately you hear Muslims nowadays talking about the enemies of Islam… and they make dua against the enemies of Islam - but which one of us has thought about in our nights and days about who our true enemies are? … Our Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) has said that our worst enemy is… our own soul (nafs)

    As-salamu ‘alaykum wa’rahmatullahi wa’barakatuhu,

Jazak’Allah (SWT) khair for sharing this with us. The second statement you quoted reminded me of this Qur’anic verse:

“And I do not free myself from blame. Indeed the human self is inclined to evil, except when my Lord bestows His Mercy (upon whom He wills). Indeed my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.” (qur’an Yusuf : 53)

Masha Allah (SWT). very insightful talk, much needed.

is it just me, or does he sound somewhat like Shaykh Hamza?

    As-salamu ‘alaykum buckminster abbey,

    a short bio: http://www.zaytuna.org/teacherMore.asp?id=25

“At the age of 19 he became Muslim in the San Francisco Bay Area and began studying with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf…”

So most likely Shaykh Hamza did have an influence on him as is evident in his talk.
