Lyrics (Source):
Wahdi fi dhulmati layli
Fi wahshati darbi
Hammi yuthqiluni
Dhanbi yu’limuni
Alone, in the darkness of my night
In the loneliness of my path
My worries weigh me down
My sins pain me
Wahdi, ad’uka wa arju
Min dhanbi ashku
Mali siwak
Ana fi himak
Alone, I supplicate to You and I hope
From my sins I complain
I have no one but You
I am at Your door
CHORUS:
Farham ‘abdan najak
Ya Allah
, ya Allah
Anta alraja
Minka alhuda
Ya Allah
, ya Allah
So forgive a servant who intimately calls You
O Allah
, O Allah
You are all hope, From You is guidance
O Allah
, O Allah
Rabbahu hudak
Ma ziltu asir
Wa’alal ‘isyan
Ma ‘udtu qadir
Fa’anir durubi
Waghfir dhunubi
Fa’anal faqir
O Allah
give me your guidance
For I am still imprisoned
Of disobedience I am no longer capable
So illuminate my paths and forgive my sins
For I am poor and in need of You
Qad ‘adal qalbu
Fiddarbi yasir
Farihan mushtaqan
Lillahi yatir
Wa rajahu ridhaka
Yawma liqaka
Antal qadir
My heart has returned to walk on the path
Full of joy and longing, flying to God
And its only hope is gaining your pleasure
On the day of meeting You
You are the Omnipotent

Can anyone PLEASE tell me why he sings in Arabic???? Apparently he was born in Iran and is of Azeri decent but raised in England correct? So he sings in Arabic for the Islamic language? Even though I sam arab I would so dig it if he sang in Azeri, or farsi.
A little birdy told me recently that most of these Islamic singers, like Native Deen or maybe Sami Yusef or 786 were originally focused on pop careers, rather than Islamic careers. When they saw more success by singing Islamic songs, bc there was a market for it,
OKay guys call me a backbiter, but this may explain my question as to why Sami Yusef sings in Arabic ( vs. Azeri) to appeal to a greater crowd. Great singers tho, I am just passing what a lil birdy told me on the phone.
Tell ur little birdy to stop slandering/backbiting these brothers. I dont know any of these singers personally, but from what i do know of Sami Yusuf, Isam Bachiri, and Native Deen, they are all very sincere in their deen.
Ask anyone who has ever met Sami Yusuf and the one word he/she will describe him as is humble. He exemplifies humility. Moreover, he doesnt even classify himself as a nasheed artist. But yes, his first two great albums have been of Islamic themes. Although he isnt Arab, he has studied tajweed and Im sure has studied and understands enough arabic to write his lyrics for his beautiful songs. You dont need to be an Arab to sing in arabic. Moreover, he also has lyrics in Turkish and Urdu. He has fans all over the world - why not cater to sing music in their languages. What is wrong with that? I love the Hasbi Rabbi part in urdu!
Native Deen also are very sincere in their work. One of my friends met one of the members of native deen’s wife at a recent Rihla Intensive. Native Deen has been around rapping about Islamic themes for a loong time (MYNA Raps, etc.). Mashallah those bros are doing their best to create positive music for dawah and entertainment purposes. And theyre really good too!
I know u didnt mention Outlandish, but i thought id add this as well. Another friend of mine actually wrote the poem “Look into my eyes”, that Isam Bachiri turned to a hit song. She is in contact with Isam, and has described Isam as devoutly religious. And granted Outlandish didnt start off that religious in their earlier music, they have gained a higher respect towards their deen over the years and it has been due to the influences of scholars like Shaykh Abdullah Adhami who have sincerely changed their hearts towards the deen. And this has been reflected in their music. There is nothing fake about it.
I dont know anything about 786 or any other Islamic singers personally, but all I can say is we should above all else give the benefit of the doubt to our brothers and sisters before accusing them of “jumping on the Islamic song bandwagon beacuse there is money in it”. Because the fact of the matter is, there would probably be more money in non-Islamic songs. How many Muslims do you know that have actually bought these CDs instead of illegally downloading them? (Which is clearly haraam btw)
No Hasseb, I am sure their deen is real and their songs are beautiful, Mash’Allah
. However lil birdy cited Native Deen as an example of a group who started singing pop ( Which, if you haven’t noticed it’s much much harder to get a record deal in Pop vs. Islamic Records). Eh, after I told lil birdy about the recent discusion on 786 etc, he told me to research how these ppl got their start in Islamic music…and he cited Native Deen as an example. Maybe I should verify lil birdies words before relaying them here. But yet again, this is a Blog, not a research paper and I am interested in everyone’s pov.
It is good to hear that Sami Yusef is singing in songs of all languages. And I truly like Native Deen’s music. They have beautiful voices and their lyrics are original.
Tell your little birdy to go croak on a nut….
I know the guys from Native Deen and you have no idea what you are talking about. They were doing Islamic music since they were in high school. Get your facts straight. It’s one thing to criticize public figures in an open forum and it’s certainly another to spread false statements acquired from your phone chats with your girlfriend.
He sings in Arabic precisely because of the reason you stated — it is an Islamic language. He has one song in which he sings in multiple languages. He also sings in English. Would anyone listen to him if he sang in Azeri? Moreover, he is a British Muslim, so why restrict him to the language of his ancestors?
I hope yours want not an Arab nationalist rant. Yes Arabs (and who is an Arab is a disputed concept) speak Arabic as their mother tongue (though perhaps my fusha as a non-native speaker is better than yours), but the language belongs to the ummah.
What’s next? Are you going to say he should pray in Azeri too?
I totally agree with you bro Haseeb. It is really disheartening to hear comments coming like that from “egyptchick7″. Ugh, that makes me so sick. Even though I am not a fan of 786 I will stick up for them on this point as well as Sami Yusuf and Native Deen. Why is it so important to make race such an issue? So what if he is not arab? He has to be arab to sing in arabic? What a disgusting thing to insinuate, really. It is totally disgusting and haraam to quote “little birdies” because it is just heresay that is slanderous.
You should refer “little birdie” to what our deen says about slandering/backbiting and gossip. It is a very serious matter.
“Woe to every slanderer(scandal mongerer) and back-biter(defamer)”
Surah 104, verse 1, of the holy Qur’an.
I’m not just quoting this in response to egyptchick but it’s also a reminder to myself as well, I need to make tauba for some harsh comments that I have made.
egyptchick7: “Can anyone PLEASE tell me why he sings in Arabic????”
um, because he can
This song is fabulous!!! As far as the polemic considered i am totally agree with my brother Hasseb, nawadays our religion is seen like hell with all fanatics and crimes committed by so-called muslims so we need great personns like Samy Yusuf, Isam bachiri and lot of others to show another side of our deen and mashallah they do it with a lot of modesty! So stop to waste our time telling that they are interested in money! They make us realize that our belief is right and our religion is true!!
forgive us.
May Allah
Okay guys…I truly respect the Islamic singers wholeheartedly. I relayed the message my friend ( I will stop calling “it” lil birdy) said. At first when my friend told me about Native Deen and the like I was as shocked as most of you are. I sincerely wanted to know everyone’s POV, which as the consensus is : They are religious singers to promote our faith rather than to get money. Ok so that is the general consensus.
But stop going out attacking me like I am a racist. Haseeb cleared it up that Sami Yusef doesn’t exclusively sing in Arabic, something I didn’t know until now. ( I am not a listener of Islamic Music ) I Just wished he would give props to his Azeri culture and sing in Azeri for once. That would be nice and it wouldn’t isolate himself from the rest of his heritage. How is it racist, when I, an Arab, an avid listener to all arbic music, wants someone to sing in another language? That is indeed ludicrous.
So , once again commenters, these thoughts are not mine and I really wanted to hear everyone’s POV on the matter. BC if a muslim friend of mine thinks like this, I wanted also to hear y’all too
im coppin this joint
beautiful piece of music and beautiful lyrics
ok ok…I get what your saying Egyptchick….It’s all good
Sounds like a Shadhili qasida to me…
But haha the instramental sounds soooooooooooooooooooo Arab old school. I felt like I was listening to Abdul Halim Hafiz (Egyptian singer of the 50s)
AS SHEIK YASIN SAID…WHEN WE JUGDE OTHER PEOPLE’S INTENTIONS, THAT IS WHEN THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH OUR INTENTIONS…so stop judging other people, and reflect on ur self. You guys can think watever…Sami Yusuf ROCKS…his work has helped me alot in coping with stress, and bringing my Iman up. WHY DO WE READ QURAN IN ARABIC AND PRAYERS IN ARABIC WHEN WE DON’T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS. The bottom line is his music is effecting people in good way so let the brother live and only Allah
can judge him.
Jazakallah khairan!
All of y’all are right and IM sorry if my friend’s views offended anyone. And I am sorry for bringing it up as if I am promoting his views. It wasn;t my argument to begin with and I shouldn’t have uhm brought it up…I didn’t expect how offended ppl would get…
you know, if you speak arabic, then you are an arab,
it is not inherited by blood, just to let you know(it is not like being jewish, if your mother is jewish then you are jewish, with arabism it is if you speak the tongue, walk the walk, talk the talk, then you an arab).
and guys please let Egypt chick alone, stop putting her on the spotlight, you defended your brothers, that’s it. she wanted to get a consensus
and I dont know or dont care about either of the singing groups on a regular day when I am bored out of my mind, then I would look into what they are saying or doing and quite frankly in my opinion it is entertainment, if it increases your eman, props to you, for me it is entertainment, playing on weddings sorta material.
Samya the point is the comments made by egyptchick are slanderous and it is back-biting. Wrong is wrong and we are allowed to say so. She should never have put up those comments in the first place. Because of her comments now shaytaan is going to whisper his evil thoughts and people may question these singers’ intentions. Her comments only caused fitnah.
That was a beautiful vid
Loved the emotions in the music and the sincere plea in the lyrics and performance.
Thanks Haseeb!
Too bad he (and other munshideen) aren’t comin to RIS this year
sub7anallah i have nothing but respect 2 this man.
the song s gr8 mashallah n here s another version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3G_RkOWMFk i think!!
to monaia, may Allah
grant you access to grade school spelling education, ameen.
egyptchick, may Allah
grant you the guidance which you are so desperately in need of.
we are all always in need of guidance
Oh my God, too many haters up in here. May Allah
SWT grant you the ability to NOT hate.
why judge people for what the once did aka: sing pop songs?..these artists arent saying anything wrong…or unislamic..sure some people may argue the whole concept of music is wrong..but thats an individuals choice..theres arguments for both sides. Listening to their music is better then listening/watching some of the other non islamic stuff out there. as for suggesting they are not true to their deen that can only be known/judged by Allah
(swt)..as far as im concerned they are sincere in the message of their music…as for the arabic..why not arabic?..its a beautiful language..if you know it why not speak/sing it..i enjoyed the mix.
p.s currently in this society sadly in some cases art (like music) is the only way to get people to be interested into the religion..

I think you shouldn’t “attack” egyptchick7, i think he deals with a interesting question… he didn”t say something bad, i think it s good to have a critical point of view, not to confirm “yes they did islamic songs for money” or “no they don’t”, but interesting to wonder. it could be somthing possible… even if i love each artists named before, and i trust on their sincerity sometimes i wonder if they do this for the good reasons… they are only human beeing and they could do that for bad reasons….
so please, let people give interesting questions even if there are “hard” to be listened….
peace
