2006 U.S. Open: Andre Agassi’s Final Tournament
Published by Haseeb September 1st, 2006 in Sports, TennisAs most of you know, I am also a tennis fan. And although I dont really follow tennis much during the year, i cant help but follow all the hoopla behind the sport when all the stars compete here at home in Queens, NY (Now if only I could get some tix…).
I have always been a huge Andre Agassi fan, and like the rest of the world, am sad to see him end his career. He isnt nearly the player he once was, as he isnt even ranked currently. Nonetheless, he still is a great player, and has alot of tennis left in him in this final tournament, the 2006 US Open. He has won the U.S. Open twice before (1994, 1999). Moreover, over the past almost 2 decades, he has had many exciting matches at Flushing Meadows. Two games that I recall off the top of my head were the 2002 US Open Finals (against Pete Sampras - he lost), and last year’s historic quarterfinals matchup against fellow American James Blake (he won) (Probably the best tennis match Ill ever see in my life)
On Monday, Agassi defeated Andrei Pavel in 5 well fought sets. And last night, Agassi faced 8th Ranked Marcos Baghdatis from Cyprus in another epic match.
Buoyed by a cortisone injection, along with a raucous, sellout crowd that boosted his spirits when things looked bleak, Agassi kept his final tournament going by beating eighth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 7-5 at the U.S. Open.
“You’re not guaranteed these moments,” Agassi said, “and to feel it out there is something I can keep with me forever.”

While Agassi should win his third round match against Benjamin Becker (inshaAllah) his matchup in the fourth round will not be as easy - he will be facing none other than 9th ranked Andy Roddick! Inshallah I will be rooting for Agassi, as well the rest of the fans here in Flushing. Sorry A-Rod!

I was on the edge of my seat last night. I had tears in my eyes when he won. I am so glad there wasn’t a fifth set tie break ! I hope he doesn’t hurt so badly tommorrow morning. B. Becker should be easy to beat but hell A-Rod is ranked 10th and Baghdatis was ranked 8th so let’s hope he beats him!
Tennis is for Russian girls
I am no tennis fan, but last night’s game was just amazing. Baghdatis(21) pushed Agassi(36) to his edge but what a come-back in those last few minutes. He is indeed one of the best sportsman I have ever seen.
I want Roddick to win
Russian girls r madd hot….i’ve heard.
I want Roddick to win too…..sorry H. Ahmed
N who the hell gets emotional for a tennis game to the point of tears??…thas just ridiculous!!!
Ridiculous!!
I love tennis. I was never a big Agassi fan until his comeback win at the French Open in 99, the same year his wife Steffi Graf also had a comeback win after the Hingis meltdown at the French. It would be nice if he could keep winning and crazy if he actually won. He’s one of the last of the great players I grew up watching still out there and tennis will be the poorer when he retires.
