In a time where we need proper and traditional Islamic voices being heard by the world, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is finally being recognized and interviewed in the press/media for his stance on the Danish Cartoons. And I feel like its about damn time!

Last Friday, in London, the BBC News reported:

The Koran stresses Muslims should “speak well to people” and “debate in a beautiful manner”, he [Shaykh Hamza Yusuf] says.

“These are the type of Koranic teachings which need to be highlighted especially when the Muslim community feels under siege and the media amplify minority voices from within the community which are not representative,” he says.

Reuters interviewed Shaykh Hamza as well earlier this week.

Yusuf said the dispute over cartoons of Prophet Mohammad (SAWS) published in European newspapers, which sparked violent protests, had degenerated into a brawl and said both Muslims and free speech supporters had been insensitive.“Criticize Islam all you want - but don’t denigrate sacred symbols and sacred beliefs,” he said, adding that the response of some Muslim protesters had been no better.

“Stomping on the Danish flag was no response — the flag has a religious symbol on it. So, it has just become reduced to a brawl,” he said.

Yusuf advocates renewed dialogue between Islam and the West and says there is still a chance to avoid a clash of civilizations.

“We’re at a crossroads. We can either go the way of dialogue, conciliation and peace or we can go the way of clashing, mutual enmity and increased hatred which will inevitably end in conflict. It’s our choice.”

And tonight, According to The Zaytuna Website, Shaykh Hamza is scheduled to appear on CNN at 10:00 ET/ 7:00 PT. If anyone out there has a TV tuner card I would highly appreciate it if you could record it and send it to me so I can put it up on this site. Jazakallah Khair.

Looks like Amir was spreading false information… maybe he was on some other night?

Asalamualaikum, As I noted in my post, this aired the day before this blog was posted. I watched it on CNN, and it was whatever. It was like those pre-recored stories with a CNN guy talking and had maybe a few shots of Hamza Yusuf in the UK (or so it looked like) and then a few lines from him on this matter. It was cool seeing him on CNN, but the bit was less than 2 min, kinda bogus. He was on BBC also, that was an actual talk with a live panel, pretty good stuff there.

unfortunately, the view that Imam Hamza Yusuf is advocating is not the traditional islamic scholarly view on those who insult the prophet. There is a consensus among the scholars that this is a crime punishable by death, muslim or non muslim. Imam Malik’s view when informed that someone was being flogged for abusing the prophet was one of shock and rage and he informed the Khalifsa (Rashid) that that person should be executed.

I understand the need to create harmony with the non Muslims however this crime is so sever that there is only view / opinion by the Ullema in 1400 years of Islamic sholarship. In the words of Rasulallah (saw) when he was informed of a women being killed because she abused the Prophet “no two goats will but heads over this” in other words, there is no argument and that her killing was justified.
