Media Attacks on Islam

I’ve gathered these from Media Matters:

  • Appearing on MSNBC’s Scarborough Country, Catholic League president William A. Donahue claimed that “people don’t trust Muslims when it comes to liberty. (Full Text and Video)

  • In referring to the controversy surrounding the Danish cartoons that caricatured the Prophet Mohammad (SAWS), The Weekly Standard’s Fred Barnes said: “We see Muslims’ contempt for democracy, for freedom of speech, for freedom of the press, and particularly, for freedom of religion.” (Full Text & Video)

  • Appearing on Fox News’ Hannity & Colmes, Oliver North said, “There is no such thing as an Islamic moderate.” (Full Text & Video)

And it shows that the words ‘Islamic moderates’ are — that’s an oxymoron. There is no such thing as an ‘Islamic moderate,’ or they would be out ordering calm and talking about the consequences of government censorship, which, of course, is what you’re going to have under the caliphate if the so-called extremists have their way.

  • In a column commenting on the recent violence linked to cartoons in European newspapers that satirized the Muslim Prophet Muhammad, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter suggested that Islam is “a car-burning cult,” and wrote that Muslims have “a predilection for violence.” (Full Text)

  • On CNN’s The Situation Room, Bill Bennett claimed that “people” who got “a good, close look” at Muslims rioting over perceived anti-Islamic cartoons would say that “these people ["Islamists"] are unhinged.” (Full Text & Video)

BENNETT: Here’s the standard: Catholicism is as Catholicism does; Judaism is as Judaism does; and, by God, Islam is as Islam does. And what it’s doing right now, I wouldn’t want to be associated with.

ZOGBY: Well, as President Bush has said, correctly, hundreds of millions of believing Muslims do not — do not — practice these things, did not burn embassies.

BENNETT: Where are they? Where are they?

BENNETT: Where are they? Where are they?

We are at home, at work, at school NOT burning embassies. Thats where we are.

Only Allah (SWT) (swt) can guide these people’s hearts. We may not see the benefit in these events now or ever, but Allah (SWT) (swt) always knows whats best. Perhaps all this press will make some people study Islam and realize its not whats being practiced by extremists or portrayed by media. Ya Rab, please bring us to that which is good and away from that which is harmful. Ameen.

I’m sure the media knows where they are. They just don’t put them on TV, that would be boring.

Yep, news is entertainment in disguise. Its a money making business, not really about news. If a typical American had a choice of watching news about Muslims burning embassies and flags or to watch news of Muslims feeding the poor…which would they watch? Violence, controversy, corruption sells.

I won’t even go into the politics and propaganda of news…thats a whole other can of worms…*ahem* Rupert Murdoch

Out of respect for good discussion and in the interest of playing devils advocate….let me say this…..what right have the muslims who live in republics to say dont publish this or that to a free press, to say oh you should publish these photos of muslims suffering, why dont you cover this muslim issue etc. when these same muslims say that these republics are meaningless, purposeless and that the only thing that matters is God and the afterlife. This way of thinking is inemicable to islam itself if you ask me, to responsible thought completely. But that aside these same muslims who dont appreciate republican governance, who do not see the point of law and order, of a liberal constitution etc. turn around and say dont vote, dont become involved in society. So on the one hand your not supposed to care about the society you live in and just you know live alienated like the cynics and stoics and christians did in the roman empire and by the same token your offended when the roman empire does something against your beliefs? Not only is it impossible to live a good life of any sort in which you tell the system leave me alone and then tell it listen to what i have to say on x y z issues. Living in any society from theocratic iran to secular america demands give and take. Ask not what your society can give you but what you can give to your society. Indeed social malise spreads when people cherish their freedoms more than being responsible but that goes for muslims as well as for anarchists.

again i’m not saying that the pinacle of islam isnt Allah (SWT) and the afterlife, but it isnt these things to the exclusion of the world, of science and of public service rather for the sake of Allah (SWT) you seek to serve, to discover, to expand and this is the more responsible appraoch to life than that of the cave-dweller and the angry terrorist.

Smokey, who are playing devil’s advocate against? What Muslim here said that republic governance is useless? Perhaps a Muslim who does believe that can answer that…

    Salaam,

Alright, some of those media comments are sweeping statements (not all). But, again, I believe Muslims are our own worst enemy. Let’s deal with what some Muslims are doing; yes, they may be a minority, but they are disgracing the Prophet salalahu alayhi wasalam, commiting treason and dishonouring Islam far more than any media comment. Islamophobia? What are we doing about them?

Complaining about the media isn’t taking us any closer to stoping the next embassy burning, restaurant being blown up, mosque being bombed, reporter being kidnapped and executed, Beslan-like massacre and so on.

    Wasalaam,

“Muslims cannot be defeated by others. We Muslims are not defeated by our enemies, but instead, we are defeated by our own selves.” [Sheikh Abdullah Azzam]

I can’t believe you decided to quote Dr Azzam. (I assume we’re talking about the same Azzam) Really? In the current madness we need less of his philosophies, thank you.

What if I hadn’t mentioned him…the statement would have still held true to some degree wouldn’t it?

For all those muslims without common sense - the ones who believe its agaisnt Islam to vote…well, read the following and then dont get angry, because you literally helped elect these people.
Forget about the media. The following statement is straight from a republican party talking head, Ann Coulter, featured as a main attraction at the annual CPAC (conservative Political Action Party). Speakers (and audience members) at this event included Dick cheney, bill frist, newt gingrich…in other words, the heads and representatives of the Republican Party.

Max Blumenthal infiltrated CPAC and here’s what she said to an adoring audience. “I think our motto should be post-9-11, ‘raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.’” (This declaration prompted a boisterous ovation.)

Ragheads talk tough, but don’t really get anything accomplished - me

There is a striking verse in the Final Testament: The Quran, which is very relevant to the current cartoon controversy as well as for the islamophobia that is present in the west…

*In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Merciful*

“You shall certainly be tried respecting your wealth and your souls, and you shall certainly hear from those who have been given the Scripture before you (The Jews and Christians) and from those who are polytheists much annoying wrong talk; and if you are patient and guard (against evil), surely this is one of the affairs (which should be) determined upon.” [Quran 3:186]

In the 1930’s-1940’s the Germans used cartoons and other means to demonise Jews in Europe. It was allowed and the Holocaust happened.Awful.

If the Muslims are continued to be demonised, ridiculed and looked down upon and society says its ok then well you guess the rest.
