As promised, here is a review of Otlandish’s latest CD, Closer than Veins. Overall, its apparent that Outlandish has long since matured since their earlier albums. Many worried if Outlandish would continue to curse in their albums like they have on a couple of previous tracks, and a producer of Closer than Veins assured me that there is no cursing on this album. Moreover, the themes of this CD further reflect their maturity and growth as musical artists, as Muslims (at least for Isam and Waqas), and ultimately, as human beings.

Here is a comprehensive track by track review of Closer than Veins, some with brief audio clips, and some excepts of lyrics I particularly liked. I will probably split up the full review over a couple of posts inshallah. (And just to set myself clear, I will not send you any mp3s of the album, please purchase the CD once it becomes available inshallah and support Outlandish!)

1. Introspective

Dont go back to sleep, time for prayer
dont let it defeat you, time to find whats ur real need my player…
Learned from Ali how to fight
    without the ego in sight
    …
Lets keep it shoulder to shoulder; feet to feet
straighten your lines from inside out to the street
    …
It makes me bow down to the Most High
And realize that whoever said a grown man cant cry - they lie
See every soul will taste death and I only fear Him
and I address the beloved with ‘peace be upon him’

This track is more of an introduction to the album. This CD is very centered with Islamic themes, and sets the overall tone for the album.

2.  Any Given Time

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Im out to fight the devil but never fought myself…
I read a thousand books but I never read myself,
My soul starving and I fear, Lord I need your help!
the hell with the devil my biggest enemy is myself
it makes me wonder if im doing this for the right reasons
i mean the money the fame, the game all sounds appealin
but instead of entertaining i prefer to enlighten
but then again who am i to be in the position
to represent a whole generation of kids and to make them believe
when till this day i still struggle to uphold my deen
i read a hundred God is Greats in less than a minute
and though my tounge is fast, im twisted, as my hearts not in it

This song stresses that no matter whats going on to us, and how much we struggle with our lives, at any given time, He (God) is always there. He is in control of our souls and nothing really can happen without him and his will. God truly is closer than our own (jugular) veins at all times, and likewise we should always be continuing to struggle to attain His Light and nearness to Him.

3. Look Into My Eyes

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

See I’ve known terror for quite some time
    57 years so cruel
Terror breathes the air I breathe
It’s the checkpoint on my way to school
Terror is the robbery of my land
And the torture of my mother
The imprisonment of my innocent father
The bullet in my baby brother
    The bulldozers and the tanks
    The gases and the guns
The bombs that fall outside my door
    All due to your funds
You blame me for defending myself
Against the ways of my enemies
I’m terrorized in my own land
    And Im the terrorist?

This is the album’s first single whose video has already been released. This song is based on a poem on the plight and struggle of the Palestinian people and the injustices they are faced with daily. I wrote about this song in an earlier post. A very beautiful yet emotional song.

4. Just Me

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Shine a light up, Brothers and Sisters, go get brighter
Even though the media (will) try to demonize us
We need to be wiser, we got our eyes wide shut
We aint gonna get no where, so man, listen up
Race or color, it aint half empty, its half full
Life is a test, we face many obstacles

This song essentially addresses the way people (like Isam and Waqas, who appear Muslim, as well as foreigners in general) are often negatively portrayed by the media. Isam sings that "im just me.. just me". Dont let all the media hype and negativity deter you from being you as life isnt meant to be easy. Sometimes you just have to take life as it comes, and do the best we can to overcome these generalized misconceptions and tribulations we face.

5.  Kom Igen

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

To be honest, I didnt understand this song. It was like rapping in 3-4 languages really fast about something. I would really appreciate it if some1 could transcribe this clip I have available in urdu. Yes thats right, URDU rapping, lol. Listen to it for urself!

Inshallah Ill review the rest of the tracks in the upcoming days…

Please do not post comments of links where u can download the album. You can listen to all tracks online on the music player on my main (blog) page. Please purchase the CD for yourself and support Outlanidsh!

  4. 4 mette knudsen from: Denmark dkyour flag

you asked about track 5 on outlandishs new album “kom igen”, there might be some urdu, but a part of it is danish: the title “kom igen” is from an old danish popular song:”Kom igen du min elskede ven” means “come again you my loved friend” and some of the quick rap is also danish, but is so fast that I cant hear it. I wonder why Outlandish dont print their lyrics on the cover??

  5. 5 Haseeb from: United States usyour flag

thanks alot mette. Im sure the lyrics will be available on the web soon enough… the album just came out less than a week ago!

    Look into my eyes:

    Look into my eyes
    Tell me what you see
You don’t see a damn thing
’cause you can’t relate to me
    You’re blinded by our differences
My life makes no sense to you
    I’m the persecuted one
You’re the red, white and blue

Each day you wake in tranquility
No fears to cross your eyes
Each day I wake in gratitude
Thanking God He let me rise
    You worry about your education
And the bills you have to pay
I worry about my vulnerable life
And if I’ll survive another day
Your biggest fear is getting a ticket
    As you cruise your Cadillac
My fear is that the tank that has just left
Will turn around and come back

Yet, do you know the truth of where your money goes?
Do you let your media deceive your mind?
Is this a truth nobody, nobody, nobody knows
Has our world gone all blind?

Do you know the truth of where your money goes?
Do you let your media deceive your mind?
Is this a truth nobody, nobody, nobody knows?
    Someone tell me…

    Ooohh, let’s not cry tonight
I promise you one day it’s through
Ohh my brothers, Ohh my sisters
Ooohh, shine a light for every soul that ain’t with us no more
Ohh my brothers, Ohh my sisters

Ohh my brothers, Ohh my sisters,

America, do you realize that the taxes that you pay
Feed the forces that traumatize my every living day
So if I won’t be here tomorrow
    It’s written in my fate
May the future bring a brighter day
    The end of our wait

Whoever made up this homepage, I love you! It was hard for me to get new matrieal from outlandish and I dindn’t even know that they are having a 3rd album. Now Im very curious I want to have this album so bad. It turns out that im in the states at this moment and probably it will be hard to find it over here/ But Im very very happy right now! Thank you so much. There is no band Like outlandish! If anybody of you did ever went to a concert then you know what im talking about. Of curse they don’t play “Look into my eyes” over here so I haven’t had a chance to see it by now. But it is a very good song though I read the lyrics, thanks Deniz. Any given time touched me from the very first moment I heard it. Well anyway, actually I just wanted to say thak you!

  16. 16 aLi from: Great Britain (UK) gbyour flag

WOAH…..this album is heavy! Man its too slick, there’s sooo much depth and meaning in the lyrics. Sakeena, Look into my eyes, Just me, I’ve seen, Beyond words and Kom Igen are particularly buzzing. I just think ts a shame that these boys wil never get recognition out of denmark- I mean they never gonna break the UK or US… BUT they have a growing army of british supporters (I’m sure some American ones too) so bring on the funk!

  17. 17 s from: United States usyour flag

    Cheers

  20. 20 aLi from: Great Britain (UK) gbyour flag

Yo Greg- Not know about tour dates, but apparently the album is released in the UK sometime in feb/march-I don’t know if u listen to the Bobby Friction & Nihal show on Radio 1-Weds 9pm, but they are ALWAYS goin on about outlandish- so tune in someday, they might be able to answer ur questions. Peace out…

    http://musik.tdconline.dk/servlets/2452306090224Dispatch/19/call?htmltemplate=./album/viewalbum.htm&albumid=1772526

Also Ive tried to write down the danish lyrics in the song: Kom igen
    Here they are:

    Oh hey
Hvorfor er det lige du tror du kender mig?
    (???)
så jeg venter bare på at du kommer med en kommentar
du ku sku bare klappe i
må I hellere bare komme igen

I am not very good at translating to english, so maybe someone could do that?

Salam Aleikum, to all you Moro’s out there. Well I’m lucky to live in DK, so could get the album, right after it dropped, and Damn its their best work out yet… Them boys have done it… They have managed too create their own sound, and for yall that hasn’t had the chance to listen to all of it, your going to be impressed as I was. Well I know that they are touring DK from the ending og November till mid January/February. It’s their management that sucks, Im tellin’ you… If they were smart they would have dropped it all over, and they wouldn’t be sorry, cause the boys got talent, and it shines through especially on this album. So if you want to complaint bout’ their marketing and publishing, go under their official homepage http://www.outlandmoro.com and go under “contact”, and write in your own sincere words to Soulcamp Entertainment and SONY, BMG Music and let them know that their better than all that ower-sellin’ Madonna and Fat Joe garbage… Thank you all for your time, and may Allah (SWT) the mercifull help you all till the end!!!

    asalaamualaykum brother,

try checking at outlandish’s website (outlandmoro.com) and contact them.

People who want to donate towards Iraq, etc. can do so through a reputable charity such as ICNA Relief, The Red Cross, or Yusuf Islam’s Small Kindness, etc. I would NOT recommend giving money to someone online you dont know personally for this. No offense to u, Gulam.

    eh desi moros waddup?

big up to the creator of this site. i really appreciate Outlandish’s albums .. and i have definitely NOT been let down on this one. Isam has such a smooth and sweet voice which makes you emotional the moment he opens his mouth lol .. waqas and lenny .. what can i say? they MAKE the group.

wikkid review man, it’s really good and MashaAllah you’ve interpreted their songs well, as in the meaning behind the song ..

btw .. im ashamed .. i downloaded the album .. but it took me 4 days!! so i was punished .. stoopid dial up .. my mother banned broadband from our house LOL!! you cant get outlandish album in the UK anyway .. ive looked everywhere!

is that Usman ahmed from moseley?? lol .. ok maybe not

omg! and i just figured out what language ”Man binder..” its in danish .. thas so kewl .. thats my chill out song ..

i dont know if you guys have noticed but outlandish and Sami Yusuf reduce you to a bowl of jelly .. seriously the lyrics are so emotional and REAL. I can relate to them man. i get tears in my eyes and i stare off into the distance. lol my mate was worried about me when i wouldnt answer her .. i had my earphones in. and my eyes closed ..

anyways .. nice chatting. i think ive said too much .. if i could say anything to outlandish .. it would be ..

    Aslaam Alaikum my moros,
MashaAllah .. you’re doing a good job. Continue making music and making my day. Everyday. May Allah (SWT) bless you and your families. you sure do have talent .. rock on Outlandish. u rock our world!!

    Desi Honey ..

  41. 41 Ima from: Great Britain (UK) gbyour flag

The Outlandish video and song is excellent- a deep song, but highlighted in a way that everyone would watch and appreciate. A hard hitting video wouldn’t attract many non muslims- a smart move by the boys. carry on spreading the word!!

  42. 42 raisah from: Great Britain (UK) gbyour flag

If u guys in the uk are still lookin out for a genuine closer than veins album, I recommend http://www.cdon.com. Being a huge outlandish fan didnt want to download or wait until february and so purchased it from this webby. It came the following day in perfect condition!!! Totally recommend u guys purchase it, instead of waiting till feb or downloading, its alot more self fulfilling and itz alot more open support for the best band in the world.
    Salam,

plz WHAT’s THE MEANING OF ELMORO

  44. 44 Nura from: Great Britain (UK) gbyour flag

El Moro is spanish for The Moor meaning = A Muslim usually of mixed Berber and Arab origins, who in present days live mainly in northwest Africa. They were conquerers of Spain in the 8th Century. But a moor is generally anyone of black and muslim origin, such as Othello in Shakespeare. That should answer your question Khalil. :)

    Look into my eyes
and tell me what you see.
You don’t see a damn thing,
`cause you can’t possibly relate to me.

    You’re blinded by our differences.
My life makes no sense to you.
    I’m the persecuted Palestinian.
You’re the American red, white and blue.

Each day you wake in tranquility.
No fears to cross your eyes.
Each day I wake in gratitude
Thanking God He let me rise.

    You worry about your education
and the bills you have to pay.
I worry about my vulnerable life
and if I’ll survive another day.

Your biggest fear is getting ticketed
    as you cruise your Cadillac.
My fear is that the tank that just left
will turn around and come back.

    American, do you realize,
that the taxes that you pay
    feed the forces that traumatize
    my every living day?

    The bulldozers and the tanks,
    the gases and the guns,
the bombs that fall outside my door,
    all due to American funds.

Yet do you know the truth
    of where your money goes?
Do you let your media deceive your mind?
Is this a truth that no one knows?

You blame me for defending myself
    against the ways of Zionists.
I’m terrorized in my own land
    and I’m the terrorist?

You think you know all about terrorism
but you don’t know it the way I do.
So let me define the term for you
And teach you what you thought you knew.

I’ve known terrorism for quite some time,
    fifty-four years and more.
It’s the fruitless garden uprooted in my yard.
It’s the bulldozer in front of my door.

Terrorism breathes the air I breathe.
It’s the checkpoint on my way to school.
It’s the curfew that jails me in my own home,
and the penalties of breaking that curfew rule.

Terrorism is the robbery of my land.
And the torture of my mother.
The imprisonment of my innocent father.
The bullet in my baby brother.

So American, don’t tell me you know about
the things I feel and see.
I’m terrorized in my own land
and the blame is put on me.

But I will not rest, I shall never settle
for the injustice my people endure.
Palestine is our land and there we’ll remain
until the day our homeland is secure.

And if that time shall never come,
then you will never see a day of peace.
I will not be thrown from my own home,
nor will my fight for justice cease.

And if I am killed, it will be in Falasteen.
It’s written on my every breath.
So in your own patriotic words,
Give me liberty or give me death.

    Gihad Ali

For one month ago, I’ve tried once to call the guy whose the responsible official publisher of the Outlandish Album in Denmark. He told me that the site http://www.outlandish.dk will be updated in one week, but nothing has happened yet. For further information I can tell you that we did booked tickets for the new Outlandish concert for 6 weeks ago. But 1½ week before the concert we were told that the concert was canceled. In stead we were told that the date of the concert was moved to 16/02/06.

So in my opinion something strange is goning on. It’s kind of strange that the album has been out for more than 2 months and still the official lyrics are not updated at the official website.

Assalamu Alaikum (peace on you) to all Muslims and non-Muslims,

My son introduced me to this group when he played Beyond words and it stuck a cord in my heart as with Allah (SWT)’s blessing I performed the Hajj last Year and this track really summed up the whole experience for me and brought all those fantastic life changes memories back, Subhan Allah (SWT). May Allah (SWT) grant this group all success in future - I could write so much more, but I need to get to the point.

This site is great and I regularly use the radio blog facility to play trax thru my work firewall - to listen to Outlandish and Sami Yusuf… I look forward to other trax soon, Insha Allah (SWT).

Shaq thanks for your earlier mail below - the site is awesome. I have downloaded all Outlandish lyrics into a word document (100pages)…the songs mean so much more when you read the english trans of Spanish etc…If anybody out there would like a copy of this doc then please feel free to fire off an e-mail to sz3cv9@hotmail.com

    Peace out.

    Khalid Khan (Manchester -UK)
