Sania Mirza loses 4th round of US Open- and has a fatwa issued against her!
Published by Haseeb September 10th, 2005 in Current News, Sports, TennisIndian (and Muslim) tennis star, Sania Mirza lost on Wednesday in the 4th round of the U.S. Open losing to #1 seed, Maria Sharapova (who coincidentally lost today). Only 18, she put on quite an impressive performance at the U.S. Open. In less than a year she has jumped in world ranking from 326 to 42. Not bad at all…
After the loss, she returned back home to Hyderabad, India for a short break before continuing her professional tennis career. However instead of congratulating her on her success, what has come of her rise in the tennis world? A fatwa against her indecent dress!. I mean cmon, yea, her awrah is exposed when she plays, and no, thats not allowed according to shariah, but dont ppl have anything better to do than pass fatwahs on 18 year old girls? Thats her decision to dress how she chooses and whatever she decides to do is between her and God! Wow, i mean leave the poor girl alone. Just go to any mall or university and looka the way all those muslim girls dress, and i guarantee that many of them are unfortunately dressed much worse than she is. A cleric who coincidentally shares the first name as me, Haseeb-ul-hasan Siddiqui, said: "The dress she wears on the tennis courts not only doesn’t cover large parts of her body but leaves nothing to the imagination."… "She will undoubtedly be a corrupting influence on these young women, which we want to prevent," Talk about not having your priorities straight….
Why cant they ever issue fatwas on fake muslims who dont pray, or who have hidden promiscous relationships, or who gamble, or i dunno PROPAGATE hate and terror??? What about fatwas against Shah Rukh Khan for the way he touches women in bollywood movies? or against Mos Def for his music videos? or all those "upper-class Muslims" who all drink alcohol? cmon, give me a break….

hmm, i think issuing a fatwa is a bit too much coz we all now what the basic requirements of a womans dress are(according to shariah). i think sum good nasihah would’ve been better. and i agree, there are many muslim girls apart from her who dont adhere to covering the awrah.should there be a fatwa issued for evry one of them too?
man i dont like all these fatwas being given so generously
Haseeb. It’s NEXT YEAR. What happened with the Mets? You want some ketchup to eat your words with? How about some white sauce/hot sauce?
As salaamlykum wrwb,
If they issue a Fatwa they addressed not only her but all the sisters that dont cover, When Fatwa’s get issue its not one man who says ” Im going issue a fatwa” they will talk about it maybe 10 people from the Ulema.
So we must respect what they say and the people who see the fatwa should take from it and see that it is a Fard to cover.
People may start to look up to her?? and forget the likes of Aisha (ra) etc.. She was the best Example For ever woman.
Yes there are fatwa’s on uni, malls etc.. I just hope we act upon what the people of Ilm are telling us.
Sorry if i said anything wrong just my view may Allah
unity us all ameen
Follow up to this post: Sania Mirza’s response:
“It is quite disturbing that my dress has become the subject of controversy I don’t want to say anything on this,” she said.
Mirza continues to be comfortable on the court. She had reached No.42 in the world rankings before the U.S. Open, becoming the first Indian, man or woman, to break into the top 50 since Ramesh Krishnan in the 1980s.
“Inshallah (God willing), I will be World Number one some day and will continue to be the first Indian woman to do a lot more things,” said Mirza, who was eliminated by Maria Sharapova.

Maybe they just want to marry the 18yr old and that is their way of catching her attention, lol!
But seriously though, eah, I also thought the fatwa thing was a little interesting, and I respect ‘ulama and everything but they should have given a general fatwa, rather than singling her out and they should have advised her individually in order not to embarrass her.
And I dont know if she is much of a muslim, she wants to be the ” World Number one ……. first Indian woman to do a lot more things” such as working with Shah Rukh Khan in a Bollywood flick? well as long as she is protraying herself as an Indian, the Muslim scholars, shouldnt be worried about her protrayal as a Muslim.
Of course whoever issued that fatwa should probably jump off a bridge. Your comment isnt much different from his though concerning what things fatwas SHOULD be issued against…some movie star? gambling? give it a rest. How about issuing a fatwa calling for people to become educated and realize whats causing most of the problems - not watching out for your fellow man, be it in asia or south asia or africa or ossetia. Most of the leaders are well educated in religion and nothing else…you know what they say about the moron not falling far from the tree…most of their disciples are going to be worried about the little things also.
nooo i didnt mean that there should be all those fatwas - this stuff is common knowledge and ppl know that its haraam. Its haraam for a non-mehram man to touch a non-mehram woman, its haraam to drink, etc. Theres no question about it!. Regardless of these rules, people end up doing whatever they want anyway, so theres no point for a fatwa on this. Its ridiculous that a fatwa is given on a particular girls dress just like it would be the other things i mentioned in my post. Fatwas should only be issued for matters over where there is doubt and uncertainty and that scholars can help clarify for us.
But i disagree, these are not little things. Its important for a person to follow the correct way of life for the sake of God and avoid what he has permitted. I also disagree in your assessment of religious scholars. We have quite a few great learned Muslim scholars who know alot more than just religion. However, ultimately whatever a person decides to do is his/her own business, as the quran says, there is no compulsion in religion. I agree with an earlier commenter’s position that some1 should have just given naseeha (advice) to this girl and leave it at that. Again theres no need to issue a fatwa as such.
i still think that that particular scholar should jump off a bridge though
scholars for dollars!
“yeah’
maybe you should join him.
salams,
there are so many muslim girls in india who look at her as a role model and want to be like her. moreover she from the begining tried to increase muslim support by saying that she is a devout muslim(unlike bollywood actors). thus she is a corrupting influence on the present generation. and something should be done.
