David Stacey

Earlier tonight, I caught the episode of 30 days , a show created and executive produced by Morgan Spurlock (Supersize Me) in which an individual is inserted into a lifestyle that is completely different from his or her upbringing, beliefs, religion or profession for 30 days. Tonights episode had a devout white Christian, David Spacey from West Virginia spend 30 days with a Muslim family in Dearborn, MI. During the course of this month, David, an archetype for a typical American without any real understanding or background in Islam learned a great deal about the religion, and its real values, beliefs, and understandings.

I thought the show was really well done. Throughout the course of the month, David at least had to be awake or present for all five daily prayers. As a devout Christain, David was very hesitant about having to worship anything other than his own Christain God. But after studying alot about Islam, by the end of the month he finally prayed with Muslims. He underwent a great spiritual transformation, as well as a grave jihad. Moreover, and more importantly, by the end of the month he gained a great deal of respect and admiration for Al-Islam.

The show was great. Not only did he visit Masjids and speak to all types of Muslims, he was completely indulged in Islam and the greater Muslim culture, in terms of his dress, his appearance (beard), having to be present for prayers, to even visiting a slaughterhouse and appreciating Islam’s stance on gender relations.

I know many muslims hoped that the show would end with him converting, but unfortunately that didnt happen. However proper dawah was given. He was invited to Islam and immersed himself into our deen. He learned a lot and in fact, many of his preconceived notions were falsified. May Allah (SWT) continue to guide and bless David, and all those who sincerely are on their own personal spiritual quests. Again, I really liked the show and highly recommend it for all to watch. If you missed it, it is scheduled to re-air on FX Sunday night at 11:00pm.
