I just thought id share my recent encounter with a particular elevator in Melville Library this past thursday night. After dropping off my final exam for my Religion and Science class in the RLS office on the 4th floor of the library, I decided to take the elevator back down. After getting in, I pressed the 1st floor button - and after like 4-5 minutes of waiting, I noticed we were still on the 4th floor. I tried pressing all the other floor buttons, and then the open door button - but to no avail. I was stuck in the elevator.

Thankfully there is an emergency phone in the elevator, so I called the police and let them know that I was stuck and to send some1 over. He says some stuff I cant understand, and then the phone gets cut off. I assume hes sending some1 over. Meanwhile I call some friends (thankfully my cell phone works) to kill time - I mean im all alone in little elevator - maybe sum1 will show me some sympathy… but NO. They all laugh at me and make fun of me. Especially Tamzid! whatta jerk! Thankfully I remember one of my friends was downstairs studying in the library at the time and I call him to come up and open the elevator from outside. HE finally makes it - but hes on the 5th floor instead, and yelling at me askin if Im there. Lol and of course I am there im stuck - where else can I go. So then finally the elevator door opens on its own - there stands an asian dude with a book cart. I get out of the elevator ASAP, yet he goes in. I told him I was stuck there for the last 15 minutes, he says “let me try” - and of course he goes in, and the elevator goes down as usually and works fine! - what the…?

But thats not all, then I run upstairs to find my friends (Walid and Murad) at the elevator still shouting for me. I told them about the asian dude. Whatever - so we think the elevator works now. So while were at the 5th floor, we decide to take the elevator back downstairs. So the elevator comes back up (the same one I was stuck in for 15 minutes) - and we decide to get in. We press the 1st floor button - the elevator goes down the 4th floor -then it doesnt move anymore. At the 4th floor the elevator is stuck! I GOT STUCK IN THE ELEVATOR AGAIN!!! Walid and Murad are laughing but i am pissed as hell! Were pressing all the buttons but nothing happens. We think of climbing out of the elevator. Walid pulls the top covering of the elevator off to the side, and gets to lift the roof off the elevator car. As he pushes it aside, it hits something (a cable?). Meanwhile sum1 calls us back on the emergency phone. Its a lady telling us to try pressing some buttons, and then asking us to jump up and down. We do - but the elevator shakes like crazy (did we break one of the cables?!?!!?!) . Then she tells us to pull the emergency alarm button- we do - then the door opens. We jet out and this time - we take the stairs down.

I was stuck in the elevator 2 times for a total of approximately 30 mins that night. Crazy… Whatever then we chilled, went to midnight breakfast and balled that night. It was quite a day…

Moral of the story: dont trust the library elevators!
