Dawud Chapelle – “Checking His Intentions”
For the past couple of weeks everyone has wondered about what happened to Dave Chappelle. Many thought he had drug problems, and it was rumored over the past couple of days that he checked himself into a mental institution in South Africa. However, many, including myself, thought he took a break from his show because he was questioning how appropriate his lifestyle with his Islam, since he was in fact a Muslim. Alot of ppl in the Muslim community in NYC have spotted Chappelle in NYC area Masjids- and this was rumored quite heavily (although not publicly in the media of course) – these rumors however, were correct.
Chappelle did in fact go to South Africa, not to a psycho ward, but rather to spend some time with a close Muslim friend. He took a leave from the show because:
My personal feeling is I didn’t like the direction of the show. I was trying to explain it to people, and no one was feeling me. There’s a lot of resistance to my opinions, so I decided, Let me remove myself from this situation. You hear so many voices jockeying for position in your mind that you want to make sure that you hear your own voice. So I figured, Let me just cut myself off from everybody, take a minute and pull a Flintstone—stop a speeding car by using my bare feet as the brakes.
In fact, he took a prior leave in December from the show to go on Hajj (he eventually got stuck in Turkey as he was unable to get a Visa in time to go to Saudi Arabia).
So to clear up all rumors and doubts, Dave Chappelle IS Muslim, and has been since 1998! Right now Chappelle is taking a break and spending some time with a close spiritual Muslim friend with whom he is “filling up his spirit”, as his corporate TV life, especially since his recent $50 million dollar contact signing, isnt very helpful towards the person he wants to be.
“If you don’t have the right people around you, and you’re moving at a million miles an hour, you can lose yourself. Everyone around me says, ‘You’re a genius, you’re great, that’s your voice,’ but I’m not sure that they’re right.”
And regarding why he hasnt been so public about his faith in Islam…
“I don’t normally talk about my religion publicly because I don’t want people to associate me and my flaws with this beautiful thing. And I believe it is a beautiful religion if you learn it the right way. It’s a lifelong effort. Your religion is your standard. Coming here [South Africa] I don’t have the distractions of fame. It quiets the ego down. I’m interested in the kind of person I’ve got to become. I want to be well rounded and the industry is a place of extremes. I want to be well balanced. I’ve got to check my intentions, man.”

Quit stereotyping you white supremacist. Have you even talked to him directly? Are you an Islamic scholar? Huh?
Imagine my surprise to see posts by people with names as clever as “fuck all muslims” spewing hatred. Islam has been around for more than 1000 years and for the vast majority of that time has been responsible for the uplifting of the poor and the oppressed (abandoning ideas that blacks are slaves because of their skin colour), giving women the right to own property and dispose of their own affairs (women got the vote in North America less than 100 years ago) and advancing the fields of mathematics, astronomy, medicine and art.
I will be the first to admit that Muslims in general have done a bad job in explaining what is normative in our faith, but the fact remains that if you get your information about Islam from bad hollywood movies, then you are either too lazy or too comfortable with your own stereotypes to find out for yourselves what is really going on. I’ll bet fans of Shareef AbdurRahim don’t seem to mind it when he carries his team to the playoffs.
