Summer Olympics 2004

This summer has gone by real fast, and ive been so busy as well. Alhamdulillah! Its better to be busy than just idly killing time. Nonetheless I finally had some time today to chill and tried to catch some of the Olympics, which are always exciting. Theres nothing like watching the best of the world compete on the grandest stage with all eyes watching. (However its sad how bad the audience turnout has been in Greece thus far)

Well, yesterday I switched channels primarily from two games early in the afternoon, the US vs Puerto Rico in Mens Basketball on NBC and Iraq vs Costa Rica on CNBC. Although I am not an avid soccer fan, I found both games quite exciting, but for very different reasons.

Ever since NBA players were allowed to play on Olympic teams in 1992, they have never lost a single game in Olympics history, and rightfully so. Basketball is an American sport and we have produced the best basketball athletes in the world. Back in 92, the original dream team averaged almost a 40 point win every game, easily winning the gold. However, times have changed, the game has changed. Basketball, just like the entire world for that matter, has become more globalized. Basketball is as much an American game now as it is an Argentinian game, a Chinese game, or even a Puerto Rican game. The greatest NBA players no longer are limited to Americans. Just check out Peja, Dirk, Steve Nash, as well as countless other great non-American NBA superstars. We no longer are the best in the world at basketball, the world has caught up with us. Whats even more sad is the lack of interest in the USA basketball program. The best Americans aren’t even willing to represent their country at the Olympics. Shaq, Kobe, KG, T-Mac, Ray Allen, Jason Kidd, among many others have all declined to play for whatever reason. Okay while some of them may actually be coming off an injury or have recently underwent surgery how can some of these guys refuse to play cause of security concerns? That is the most pathetic thing I have ever heard, and I have lost all respect for these guys. Instead we end up having a team of players that consist of guys who are barely all stars. I mean c’mon, what the hell is Carlos Boozer doing on Team USA?? And to top it off, you have most of the players who play the same type of game. You have only one true center (Tim Duncan, who actually plays PF in San Antonio), and two point guards who both have been primary scorers for their team (marbury and wade) and a bunch of high flying young take-it-to-the-hoop scorers. What you don’t have is a TEAM. I was not surprised at all in seein the US lose by 19 to Puerto Rico. I don’t think they will win any medal at all this year. Teams like Argentina, Spain, Germany are a lot better than the current US team and I look forward to seeing the US lose. You guys can call the first loss a wake up call, but I think its more of a wakeup call to the real great NBA players like KG and Shaq who opted not to play. And I don’t feel sorry at all for any of team USA, who I do feel sorry for is Coach Brown. After a superb season in Detroit he was stuck with coaching a team of scrubs and having to be the coach of the first US Olympic team not to win.

Now on the other hand, the other game I watched was totally different. I saw the ultimate underdogs, the IRAQI team win its first Olympic game yesterday. Damn those guys played with a lot of heart. Considering we destroyed their only football stadium and all the hardships they had to deal with back at home, they are still our playing their hearts out. I know the entire world is rooting for Team IRAQ to win and I really hope they fare well. What I REALLY look forward to is a match where Iraq faces team USA and DESTROYS the US! How awesome would that be? One can only pray…

All right that’s all for now…

I doubt ill ever post this much again but well see how it goes. A very busy week coming up inshallah I hope I take care of everything that needs to be done.
